Splatting is a hardware-accelerated technique for volume rendering, which makes it relatively fast. This is because it uses the graphics hardware. Splatting takes the 3-D scalar data and maps it onto a rectilinear grid. At each node of the grid, the method draws a textured polygon. The transfer function maps the color and opacity to the polygon. While it is fast, it may require a large number of sampled points to look good.
