ParaView is able to animate a series of legacy VTK files if those files have a certain naming pattern. The patterns that are allowed are:

  • fileN.vtk
  • file-N.vtk
  • file.N.vtk
  • Nfile.vtk
  • N.file.vtk

where N is an integer. N can be padded with leading zeroes. For example, ParaView recognizes the following as a valid sequence of legacy VTK files:

  • file0001.vtk
  • file0002.vtk
  • file0003.vtk
  • file0004.vtk

To load a series of legacy VTK files, use File->Open or ParaViewOpenDataIcon.png, and navigate to the directory where the date is located. In the Open File window, you will see the files collapsed into one group as is shown in Figure 1 - on the right. These can be expanded to show all the files by clicking on the + sign, as is seen in Figure 2. Once you click OK from the file reader, and click the Apply button in the Object Inspector, ParaView will load all the filenames and treat each file as a time step. These files can now have filters applied to them that are time dependent, such as animation.
